When visiting the African continent one can expect to be immersed in an exhilarating atmosphere, rich in history, art, culture, and an experience only Africa can provide. In the heart of the continent, in sub-Saharan Africa, lies the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), home to more than 90 million people. Considered to be the most Francophone city in the world, Kinshasa - the capital of the DRC, is also the largest city in the African continent. Established as a trading post in 1981, it grew exponentially into a metropolitan of economic activity with a navigable port which now boasts a wealth of universities, various inclusive cultures, and a renowned music and art industry.
The numerous epochs and ethnicities of the DRC are displayed in the National Museum in Kinshasa, established by the president in 2019, and holding 12 000 objects depicting Congolese heritage. Though this is a cultural eutopia, there are several other historically rich museums to visit in the city as well as art houses and installations holding rare, locally produced art pieces. Famed for its single artists, there is a foundation of belief in the creative economy and embracing the inclusion of its culturally based roots.
Musicians from Kinshasa are known and famed throughout the African continent and established bands often travel to Europe and the U.S.A. The capital is well known for its musical talent and produces a socially influencing industry of musicians across a variety of genres. The musical influences are also noted in the colourful and expressive paintings, lining the sidewalks as local painters attempt to sell their wares to passers-by.
Kinshasa has not only produced a treasure trove of musical influences, but also inspiring poets, flowering literary writers, thought provoking sculptural artists, and has ultimately managed to evoke an entire sector of creative expression. Its rich history of culture, immersed into every aspect of its presence, awakens a sense of revelation regarding the endless possibilities held in its grasp. As the city grows and applies its artistic prevalence to its economic expansions and tourism attractions it will continue to fascinate and inspire local artists.
